Bourbon barrel-aged brew makes its Crossbuck debut
In ancient Scottish lore, a “widdifow” was known as a scamp, a rogue or a mischievous sort. Our new barrel-aged Widdiefu Strong Scotch Ale is just as full of adventure but with perhaps a bit more refinement. This special brew spent nine months aging in Makers Mark bourbon barrels, including one from the Makers Mark Private Select El Gaucho blend.
This limited edition brew has vanilla and caramel aromas with hints of smoke, dried fruit flavors and toffee notes. Scotch ales are sometimes referred to as “Wee Heavy” and are malty, rich ales full of caramel flavors and aromas due to the longer boil in the kettle.
The Widdiefu was brewed in April of 2019 and went into two barrels on May 2nd after fermentation was complete. Head Brewer, Nate Sherrod, says he was surprised by the noticeable difference in character from one barrel to the next. “We used two Makers Mark barrels but one was the Private Select from El Gaucho. They both contributed nice bourbon complexities, but the Private Select had a bit more intensity in vanilla and caramel flavors.” At 8% ABV and 23 IBU, it’s a big brew but drinks smooth with enchanting bourbon character.
Sherrod says the Widdiefu is a perfect pairing for a ribeye steak, braised beef and other hearty or savory dishes. It would also make a nice dessert companion with a rich chocolate cake or brownie. With only 93 gallons brewed, we expect it to disappear quickly so hurry in to give it a try.
